A ground-breaking 2 million out of the 10 million monthly active users of the MetaMask wallet are from the Philippines, according to an exclusive interview by BitPinas with Jacob Cantele, MetaMask’s lead of operations.
What is MetaMask?
To simply explain, MetaMask is a crypto wallet and gateway to different blockchain apps. It was first created in 2016 for apps on the Ethereum network and now supports other networks such as Binance’s Binance Smart Chain (BSC), Polygon’s MATIC Network, etc.
What could this mean for the Philippines?
In Southeast Asia, it is known that aside from Singapore, developing countries are now also adopting cryptocurrency. The Philippines has proven itself a strong contender this year when it comes to cryptocurrency especially now that it ranks 1st in MetaMasks’s top market.
This is mostly all thanks to Axie Infinity. The Play-to-Earn game’s downloads per month have surpassed 70,000 last April with 29,000 coming from the Philippines, and their growth goes side-by-side with MetaMasks user acquisition being most players’ main wallet.
With more DeFi apps being launched, MetaMask’s users are expected to rise, and seeing the Philippines on top will no longer be a surprise.
